1939: Dick Burton broke a 29-year drought for British champions at St. Andrews, defeating American golfer Johnny Bulla by two strokes. Burton also earned a unique distinction in British Open history when he won the Claret Jug in 1939: Burton held the title for seven years as a result of the tournament's suspension during World War II.
