1969: Tony Jacklin earned national hero status at Royal Lytham & St. Annes by becoming the first British player since Max Faulkner in 1951 to win the British Open. Jacklin recorded a 280 total for a two-stroke victory over Bob Charles. His win sparked a revival of the sport among British youth.
