2004: Todd Hamilton defeated Ernie Els in a four-hole playoff to capture the first
major victory of his career and the 133rd Open Championship. On
the final playoff hole at Royal Troon, Hamilton pitch to
3-feet from the pin. This, combined with Els' failed 30-footer for birdie gave the
title to the 38-year-old PGA TOUR rookie. For Els, it was his second
playoff appearance at the tournament in three years, the other
coming during his victory in 2002.
